More of the S word

All signs seem to be pointing that one word will be shaping the web in Q4 and in 2010 - standards. 

The latest indicator can be found in Daisy Whitney's latest article on iMediaConnection.com.  Daisy makes a couple of interesting points:

  • Video formats for ads need to be standardized (I believe a standard in HTML 5 will help accomplish this task).
  • Metrics need to be focused on the most relevant
  • The term view needs defined.  Is a view a 100% stream or just if the video has started to play?
  • Potential standards need to be tested in field trials by industry leaders

Kill your CPM obsession

 An interesting article in ending the obsession with CPM on the web.

CPM buying was certainly a valuable measuring tool time during a where conversion rates and interactions could not be measured, but in a digital world where nearly every aspect of the interaction can be observed and tracked it doesn't really matter how many people see your create, rather how many people interact with it.

Article highlights:

  • Media planners and buyers are often not able to develop a strategy for media buys linked to business objectives
  • Overemphasizing the CPM means overlooking other important areas of the buy
  • Planners must look at the efficiency of the media
